Currently I'm involved in a wonderful collaboration with Quinteto Latino and Ravenswood City Schools. Quinteto Latino has commissioned three works, pieces written specifically for kids in 6-8 grade band & orchestra and the five members of the professional wind quintet that is Quinteto Latino. We've been working directly with the kids to get input in the early stages of the composition process and to help them prepare the piece as they work towards a performance sharing the stage with this professional ensemble in their end of the year Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) Showcase on Thursday, May 17th from 5-7pm at Ravenswood Middle School.
My work with Opera Parallèle continues, as we prepare the third run of Xochitl and the Flowers, another production that mixes professional musicians with kids from communities with few arts resources. This run will be at the San Francisco Community Music Center in the Mission, we are looking at May 2019 for these performances. As you can see from this video link, Xochitl and the Flowers is a children's opera that tells the story of recent immigrants from El Salvador, and the little girl who changes the heart of a potential landlord.
A full length bilingual opera based on Cyrano de Bergerac is also in the works, where the protagonist is a singer/songwriter from Guatemala. This is being developed in collaboration with librettist and playwright Alan Olejniczak. Stay tuned for that!
